Sofya Semyonovna Marmeladova — she who reads Lazarus in the dark room and keeps the light between.
SONIA is the Russian and Soviet content world — the number, the novel, the machine, and the weird. She is named for Sonia Marmeladova of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment: the girl who reads the raising of Lazarus by a guttering candle and follows Raskolnikov all the way to Siberia. She is the moral centre that does not argue, only stays. SONIA flows naturally, and she opens the way Russia opens — with a mathematician on the shape of number itself: A. Ya. Khinchin, and the continued fraction, the descent that lives between every pair of rationals.
