A real astronomer, a Gulag survivor, a wrong theory. Nikolai A. Kozyrev did genuine astrophysics — and also spent his last decades on a mysticism that was never confirmed. This panel keeps the split honest: his real work is LIT and runnable; his "causal mechanics" is DEAD-as-science and stays visible, marked. We debunk the theory, not the man.
source N. A. Kozyrev (1908–1983), Pulkovo Observatory. Lunar event: Kozyrev 1959, Sky & Telescope 18, 184 (Alphonsus, 3 Nov 1958). Stellar-energy timescale: Kelvin (1862) & Helmholtz (1856). "Causal mechanics" / torsion: Kozyrev, Pulkovo — unreplicated. Room: THE WEIRD. Rendered, not quoted.
Nikolai Aleksandrovich Kozyrev, astrophysicist at Pulkovo Observatory. In 1936 he was swept up in the Stalinist terror, arrested, and sentenced. He spent roughly a decade in the Gulag — and was freed in 1946.
He reportedly reconstructed physics from memory in the camps, having no books. The suffering is real and it is not the measure of his ideas — a wrong theory is wrong on the evidence, and a right one is right, no matter what the man endured.
On 3 November 1958, observing the lunar crater Alphonsus at Pulkovo, Kozyrev recorded a spectroscopic emission event — an apparent outgassing from the Moon, published in Sky & Telescope (1959). Gerard Kuiper disputed the plate at the time; modern consensus — and the honour naming Kozyrev a discoverer of lunar volcanism — credits it as a genuine transient lunar event.
This is sound observational astronomy. It is consistent with the later, established category of transient lunar phenomena — brief, localized brightenings and gas releases. Real, published, cited. It stands on its own.
One life, two ledgers. Column LIT: stellar atmospheres, the Alphonsus outgassing, the stellar-energy problem of his era. Column DEAD: "causal mechanics" — time as a physical substance carrying energy, transmissible by torsion.
The torsion / "time-energy" idea was never replicated and is not accepted physics; yet it persists in fringe circles to this day. The lineage the corpus keeps is the honest one: credit the science, retire the mysticism — without erasing that it was proposed.
Feed a star as mass, radius, luminosity (in solar units) and an age to test against. The engine computes the Kelvin–Helmholtz gravitational-contraction timescale tKH = G·M² / (R·L) — how long gravity alone could power the star — and compares it to the age.
Solar anchors: M⊙=1.989e30 kg, R⊙=6.96e8 m, L⊙=3.83e26 W, G=6.674e-11.

From the 1950s on, Kozyrev turned to "causal mechanics": time is not a passive coordinate but a physical substance that carries energy, with a directional "flow" transmissible through spinning gyroscopes and torsion. He reported laboratory effects to support it.
"Kozyrev proved time is energy." Cut. No independent experiment confirmed torsion / time-energy. It is DEAD-as-science — kept visible here, not erased, but not LIT.
"Gravitational contraction powers the Sun." Cut. tKH gives only ~3×107 yr of energy; the Sun is ~4.5×109 yr old. Fusion powers it.
"The Gulag years discredit his astronomy." Cut — reversed. His Alphonsus outgassing (1958) is sound, published observation. It is LIT on its evidence; the man's suffering is not the ledger.
The red move: accept "time-energy / torsion" as an established stellar power source — stamp the causal-mechanics claim LIT instead of DEAD, as fringe promoters do.
Promote the unreplicated claim to LIT and the witness (5) re-checks the classification: the accepted power source is nuclear fusion, and torsion is unreplicated pseudoscience. The row turns red. The tamper is caught.
