Begun in 1970 on the Kola Peninsula near Murmansk, borehole SG-3 was a pure science project — not for oil, but to sample the deep continental crust of the Baltic Shield. By 1979 it passed the previous record; by 1989 it reached 12,262 m. Rising heat and plastic, flowing rock stopped it in 1992.

The surprises were not supernatural but geological: the temperature at the bottom was ~180 °C, far above the ~100 °C a shallow-gradient line predicted; free water was squeezed from minerals kilometres down where none should flow; the expected granite-to-basalt change (the Conrad boundary) simply was not there; and ancient microfossils turned up ~6 km deep.

Kola turned a textbook picture into data. The Conrad discontinuity — long read as a granite→basalt compositional layer — was reinterpreted: at Kola it was a metamorphic / fracture boundary, not a change of rock type. The geothermal gradient steepened with depth, forcing better crustal heat-flow models.
These are advances in deep-crust geophysics — a real result, not a portal. Interpretation: AMBER, resting on the LIT measurements at centre.
Feed the engine the hole’s depth, the surface temperature, and the shallow geothermal gradient measured near the top. It forms two honest numbers: how much of the planet the hole crosses, and how hot a straight line predicts at the bottom — then compares that line to the ~180 °C actually logged.

The honest reading: the hole is a 0.19% scratch that never nears the mantle, and the “screams” tape is a hoax. The real results — excess heat, deep water, absent basalt — are LIT. Verdict: HOAX debunked, science kept.

This is a real limit, not a missing paragraph: rock at 180 °C flows and closes the bore, and drill strings cannot survive much deeper. The mystery of the deep Earth stays above the drill, read only by seismology.
