RUSSIAN COSMISM

A real movement with a strange creed: the cosmists held that humanity had a moral duty to conquer death, resurrect every ancestor, and fill the whole cosmos with life. The philosophy is rendered here, not endorsed — stamped AMBER. What is LIT is the physics underneath the dream: a self-replicating wave at speed v reaches radius R = v·t, so reachable volume grows as t³, and a galaxy 50,000 light-years in radius is crossed in 500,000 years at one-tenth light-speed. And the wall the dream cannot pass is real too: relativity caps v < c. Physics LIT · philosophy AMBER · resurrection DEAD-as-science.

ROOTS — Fedorov & the common task AMBER

Nikolai Fedorovich Fedorov (1829–1903), a Moscow librarian, taught that death is not fate but an enemy to be defeated by science. His “common task” (obshchee delo): unite all humanity in one project — master nature, abolish death, and resurrect every ancestor who ever lived.

Because a resurrected multitude could not fit on one planet, Fedorov concluded the dead must be re-housed across the cosmos. Space settlement was, for him, a moral necessity — not an adventure. This is the creed being rendered; it is interpretation, stamped AMBER.

THE COSMIST THESIS — fill the cosmos, defeat death AMBER

Tsiolkovsky carried Fedorov’s charge into physics. His panpsychism held that matter itself feels; his famous line: “Earth is the cradle of humanity” — but one does not stay in the cradle forever (Tsiolkovsky, 1911, paraphrased).

The thesis, rendered plainly: life is obligated to expand without bound, converting dead cosmos into living cosmos, until the universe is full. The engine to the right tests only the reachable part of that claim — how far, how fast, how many stars — and where physics says stop.

INFLUENCE & THE WITNESS — cosmism → Sputnik history live

The mysticism is dead science; the influence is real history. Fedorov → Tsiolkovsky (rocketry math, 1903) → the young engineers who read him → Korolev, chief designer → Sputnik (1957) and Gagarin (1961). A resurrection cult seeded the first spaceflight. That lineage is documented.

The blue team re-derives the engine’s invariants live: t³ scaling, R/v crossing time, monotone reach, and the v<c cap. If red pushes v to lightspeed (8), this badge goes red.

DATA IN — the wave in ↓

A self-replicating colonisation wave expands outward at a fixed fraction of light-speed. Set the speed and the elapsed time; the density fixes how many stars sit inside a light-year cube (a uniform-sphere idealisation, stamped AMBER).

▣ THE PANEL — the reach LIT

Reachable volume against elapsed time — each row computed from R=v·t, never looked up. Double the time and the volume multiplies by 8 = 2³; the ratio column proves the cube law live:

DATA OUT — crossing the galaxy out ↓

Milky Way radius ≈ 50,000 ly. At v = 0.1c the crossing time is 50000 / 0.1 = 500,000 years — a geological blink beside the galaxy’s 13-billion-year age. This is the LIT core of the cosmist dream: the galaxy really is reachable, fast.

THE FERMI TIE — where is everybody?

WALL If a wave crosses a galaxy in ~500,000 years — nothing on cosmic timescales — then any civilisation older than us should have already filled the sky. Yet we see silence. Enrico Fermi’s question stands: where is everybody?

The very speed that makes cosmism plausible sharpens the paradox. The reachability the engine proves is the premise of the Great Silence, not an escape from it.

7

THE GRAVEYARD — kept visible, not hidden

“Science will physically resurrect every ancestor.” DEAD. No mechanism recovers information erased by death and decay; this is mysticism, not science. Kept on display, not buried.

“Matter itself is conscious (panpsychism).” AMBER. A metaphysical stance, untestable — rendered, not endorsed.

“Cosmism was just fantasy, it changed nothing.” Cut. Its influence on Tsiolkovsky and the Soviet space programme is LIT history.

8

THE TAMPER — break the light-speed cap

The red team’s move: push the wave faster than light to build an “instant cosmos.” Set v ≥ c and the crossing time collapses toward zero — but the honest wall of relativity bars it. The witness (6) goes red.

Relativity caps v < c. The “instant cosmos” is barred by physics, not by choice — the tamper is real and it is caught.
