THE MUTUAL AID

Kropotkin’s answer to "nature red in tooth and claw": mutual aid, not only competition, is a factor of evolution. This panel is runnable — it decides Hamilton’s rule (an altruistic gene spreads when r·b > c) and plays the repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma, where tit-for-tat beats always-defect over many rounds while unconditional cooperation is exploited. The honest edge: cooperation is evolutionarily real only where reciprocity or kinship hold.

ROOTS — Kropotkin 1902

Pyotr Kropotkin (1842–1921): a prince who became the leading theorist of anarcho-communism. A trained geographer, he read Siberian fauna and saw cooperation everywhere — herds, colonies, mutual defence — not only Darwin’s struggle.

Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution (1902) was written against the Social Darwinism of Huxley and Spencer, who read nature as pure competition. Alongside Mikhail Bakunin (1814–1876), Kropotkin anchors the Russian anarchist tradition: no state, federated free association.

THE ANARCHIST BRANCH the split

Both Kropotkin and Marx opposed capitalism; they split on the state. Marx wanted the workers to seize the state (a transitional "dictatorship of the proletariat"). Kropotkin held that the state itself is the machine of domination — you cannot liberate through it.

His alternative was mutual aid: cooperation organised from below, federation without a ruling apparatus. That is the anarchist counter to GOBERNET’s Marxism — same room, THE STATE, opposite verdict. The engine below tests when that cooperation can actually survive.

LINEAGE — to Axelrod and after

Kropotkin, 1902: cooperation is a real evolutionary factor — asserted from field observation. The mechanism came later.

W. D. Hamilton (1964): kin selection — r·b > c. Robert Trivers (1971): reciprocal altruism. Robert Axelrod’s 1980 computer tournament: tit-for-tat, submitted by Anatol Rapoport, won the repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma. Modern evolution-of-cooperation theory (Nowak) formalises exactly what Kropotkin saw — and bounds it.

DATA IN — the thesis, made testable in ↓

THE THESIS framing: cooperation is a factor of evolution. Two live mechanisms make it testable. Hamilton’s rule — set relatedness r, benefit to the recipient b, cost to the altruist c; the gene spreads when r·b > c.

Reciprocity — the repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma. Pick two strategies and a number of rounds; payoffs are T=5, R=3, P=1, S=0.

honest The bounded claim. TFT beats ALLD only because it can remember and punish defection; against ALLD it still loses round one. Mutual aid is real — but only where reciprocity (memory) or kinship (r·b>c) hold. Remove them and defection wins. The tamper (8) proves it.

THE ADVERSARY — "tooth and claw"

WALL Social Darwinism. Nature is pure competition; the fittest crush the rest; cooperation is sentiment. This was the reigning read when Kropotkin wrote — and it is partly right: in a one-shot encounter between strangers, defection strictly dominates. A lone cooperator is exploited every time.

The wall is real and the engine respects it. Kropotkin’s error would be to claim cooperation always wins. It does not. It wins where the game repeats (reciprocity) or the players share genes (kinship). Outside those conditions, the adversary is correct.

7

THE GRAVEYARD

"Nature is pure competition." Cut. Mutual aid is measurable: TFT-vs-TFT earns N·R where ALLD-vs-ALLD earns only N·P. Cooperators can out-earn defectors — when the game repeats.

"Altruism cannot evolve." Cut. Hamilton’s rule gives the exact condition: r·b > c. Help kin when relatedness times benefit exceeds your cost, and the gene spreads.

"Cooperation always wins." Cut — the honest half. ALLC is exploited to the floor by ALLD (N·S vs N·T), and in a one-shot game defection dominates. Cooperation is real, not universal.

8

THE TAMPER — make it one-shot

The red move: strip memory from the game — make every encounter one-shot. With no future rounds to punish defection, TFT can no longer retaliate; it collapses into a helpless cooperator and is exploited like ALLC.

Remove memory and re-run: TFT stops punishing ALLD, its loss stops being bounded to one round, and the witness (5) — "reciprocity keeps cooperation viable" — turns red. Defection wins; mutual aid survives only with reciprocity or kinship.
