USSR, 1930s–1960s: the state decreed that Mendelian genetics was false and that acquired characteristics — a cold-treated (“vernalized”) seed’s new habit — were heritably transmitted. This panel is runnable: real genetics holds — a live Punnett square gives 3:1 and 9:3:3:1, Hardy–Weinberg sums to 1. Lysenko’s Lamarckian claim has no mechanism and does not reproduce. When the state decreed truth, the ratios did not obey.
source Trofim Lysenko and Lysenkoism, USSR; the 1948 VASKhNIL session that banned genetics; the arrest of Nikolai Vavilov (1940, died in prison 1943). Genetics after Mendel (1866) and Hardy–Weinberg (1908). Room: THE STATE. Rendered, not quoted.
Trofim Lysenko rose under Stalin promising fast harvests through vernalization — chilling seed to change its growth. He rejected the gene and the chromosome as “bourgeois” invention, teaching instead that traits acquired in a plant’s lifetime pass to its offspring.
At the August 1948 VASKhNIL session (the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences), Mendelian genetics was declared false and effectively banned in Soviet science and teaching. Dissent was career-ending, and worse.
Each parent carries two alleles per gene and passes one at random (Mendel’s law of segregation). Cross two heterozygotes Aa × Aa and the offspring genotypes fall 1 : 2 : 1 (AA : Aa : aa); with A dominant, the visible phenotypes fall 3 : 1.
Two independent genes AaBb × AaBb give the classic 9 : 3 : 3 : 1. These are not opinions — they are counted in gardens and they reproduce. The engine to the right runs the square and checks it.
For an allele at frequency p (and q = 1−p), a large random-mating population settles at genotype frequencies
p² + 2pq + q² = 1
Anchor p = 0.6: 0.36 (AA) + 0.48 (Aa) + 0.16 (aa) = 1. The identity is algebraic — it holds for every p, and the engine samples many to prove it sums to one.
| p | p² | 2pq | q² | sum |
|---|
Pick a cross and a Hardy–Weinberg allele frequency. The engine builds the gametes, fills the Punnett square, counts the offspring, and reports the ratio — the same arithmetic that runs whatever the state decrees.
The Punnett square — every gamete of one parent against every gamete of the other:
Genotype ratio: —
Phenotype ratio: —
Hardy–Weinberg at this p — genotype frequencies in a random-mating population:
AA = — · Aa = — · aa = — · sum = —
| cross | observed | engine predicts | ok |
|---|
An estimated ~3,000 biologists were dismissed, imprisoned, or worse. Genetics teaching was gutted; Soviet agriculture and biology were set back a generation. These are cited historical facts, recorded here without embellishment.
“Acquired characteristics are heritably transmitted.” DEAD. As a general mechanism of inheritance it has no carrier and no reproducible result. A cold-treated seed does not pass its chilling to its offspring’s genome; the trait reverts. The claim fails the cross.
The red move: adopt Lysenko’s rule inside the engine — deny segregation, let each parent transmit its expressed character wholesale (the acquired/dominant trait), not a randomly segregated allele.
Under Lysenkoism the Punnett square collapses: the recessive allele “disappears,” the cross predicts 4 : 0 instead of 3 : 1, and the witness (5) — comparing the prediction to what gardens actually count — turns red. Ideology cannot repeal the ratios.
