The Underground Man — sick, spiteful, unattractive — writes from his corner against the Crystal Palace of rational egoism: the promise that once a person is shown their true advantage they must act on it, “like a piano key or an organ stop.” His whole revolt is one move: at the very same state he will act against his advantage, precisely to prove he is not a key. The blue team builds the egoist as a clean function; the red team insists the man is just another utility table.
source Fyodor Dostoevsky, Notes from Underground (Записки из подполья, 1864) — a reply to Chernyshevsky’s What Is to Be Done?. Room: THE NOVEL. The philosophy is interpretation; only one narrow formal fact is claimed LIT.
Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881) opens with a nameless narrator: “I am a sick man … I am a spiteful man.” A retired clerk of forty, festering in his corner in Petersburg, he addresses a hostile reader who is never there.
The book is a direct reply to Chernyshevsky’s What Is to Be Done? (1863), whose heroes act only on enlightened self-interest. Dostoevsky answers: give me a man who will spit on his own advantage, just to be free.
Model the rational egoist as a total function U: State → Action: for each state there is exactly one forced action — the piano key. A function is well-defined iff every input maps to exactly one output.
The egoist policy passes the check: 4 states, each with a single action, max branches = 1. It IS a function — a lawful lookup table.
The Underground Man’s move: at the same state s0 he keeps both actions — take the advantage and refuse it from spite. The relation now contains (s0, advantageous) and (s0, spiteful) with the two distinct.
The same check FLAGS the doubled key: s0 → {A, B}, branch count = 2. A one-to-two mapping is not a function — and the second branch is ≥ 1 free bit (log₂2) the closed table cannot encode.
The blue team re-runs the core claims on load: the egoist lookup is a valid function (max branches 1); the caprice relation FAILS well-definedness at s0 (branches 2); the closed table returns 4 (not 5); and inserting a second value at one key raises the branch count 1→2 (≥ 1 free bit). If red claims the man is “just a utility function” (6), this badge turns red.
Feed the machine a policy. EGOIST U is the total function — one state, one forced action. CAPRICE R is the Underground Man’s relation — it keeps a second action at s0.

Arithmetic anchor: the closed table stays 2×2 = 4 (one value). Insert a second value — 2×2 = 5 — and the key 2×2 now has 2 branches: a one-to-two map, formally not a function.
LINEAGE. The man who refuses his own advantage → Nietzsche’s will over reason → existentialism → Zamyatin’s One State and the √−1 it cannot absorb (zamyatin-we). The anti-determinist thread: a self that will not close over any table.
Chernyshevsky’s dream: rational egoism. Know your true advantage and you must act on it — man reduced to “a piano key or an organ stop.” History becomes a table you can precompute; the Crystal Palace is the finished, transparent, wholly reasonable world.
In the Palace, every state has exactly one forced key. The Underground Man’s whole objection is that he can, at s0, strike a different key — and there is no table that holds both.
“2×2 = 4, so man is a piano key.” Cut. The arithmetic is fine; the inference is not. Caprice is a one-to-two map at s0 — formally not a function — so no closed table contains it.
“The Underground Man is just another utility function.” Cut. A function needs one output per input. His relation carries two at s0; the well-definedness check refuses it.
“Shown his advantage, he must take it.” Cut. “Two times two is five is sometimes a most charming little thing” — the free bit he inserts to prove he is no key.
The red move — the Palace’s own demand: assert that the caprice relation is a valid function (fully predictable). Feed his relation to the check anyway; the doubled key s0 → {A, B} makes it NOT a function, so the witness (9) recomputes and turns red.
The Palace can schedule the egoist perfectly, but it cannot make a one-to-two map into a function. The lie is measurable, and the witness catches it.
