Chapter 3: something in the air. The peace is a year old when the joint watch station picks up a faint pulse in the moss air. A spore plume is rising and falling with a hidden rhythm, buried in noise. The upper trace is the raw signal. The lower trace is its spectrum, computed live by a fast Fourier transform. Averaging more frames makes a peak rise out of the noise floor, and nobody puts it there. The peak's frequency gives the period of the bursts, and with it the identity of the threat: a chytrid, a parasitic fungus whose swimming zoospores infect diatoms, and whose relatives infect tardigrades.
