Chapter 9: the shared page. In the clean moss beyond the rim, the travellers find a ruin with a library, and in it a codex holding two texts. One is a Frustulate silica-recipe and the other a Tunborn shield-recipe, written in a script of twenty letters. Ombrel and Kessa compare them letter by letter with the old alignment method. A grid is filled cell by cell, each cell taking the best of match, gap or mismatch from its neighbours (Needleman–Wunsch). A path is then traced back through it. Both texts turn out to descend from one ancestral text, by mutation over time, and the alignment recovers how much of it they still share. The bookplate records it. Each completed row of the grid is a reservation on the ledger, and the final alignment is sealed. Tap the plate to copy the texts again over another thousand generations.

LIT: Dsup ("damage suppressor") is a real tardigrade protein (Ramazzottius varieornatus, Hashimoto et al., 2016) that binds chromatin and reduces DNA damage from X-rays. Diatoms make silica with silaffin proteins. Needleman–Wunsch (1970) is a global alignment algorithm. INVENTED: the two texts here are simulated sequences, not real Dsup or silaffin, and their shared ancestor is generated from the seed.
