Quarantine Findings

Chapter 5: the trial. Ombrel the glass-wright and a Tunborn healer named Rook Sedgewater propose a remedy, a salve of fine silica dust that the Frustulate say clogs zoospores. Instead of arguing, the joint council runs a randomised trial and shows it as a conference poster that writes itself. Colonies enrol one at a time, and a coin decides salve or no salve. Outcomes accumulate, and a bootstrap confidence interval shrinks as data arrives. The conclusion is not written in advance. It is whatever the data say, and with some seeds the salve does nothing. Each colony's random assignment is a reservation on the ledger. Re-randomising a colony after seeing its outcome is refused as a double vote, so nobody can quietly cherry-pick. Tap the poster to enrol 20 more.

LIT: randomisation, pre-registration and bootstrap confidence intervals (Efron, 1979) are standard trial practice. Silica and chytrids: no such remedy is known, so INVENTED. MODEL: infection probability 0.45, multiplied by (1 − effect) under the salve, with the effect drawn from the seed and possibly zero.

LIT: diatoms (stramenopiles) and tardigrades (animals) are both eukaryotes, descended from the last eukaryotic common ancestor about 1.8 to 2 billion years ago. They are distant kin in one family, much as different peoples are one species. Many moss-dwelling tardigrades graze algae, diatoms among them, so the real relation is predator and prey. INVENTED: their castes, houses, war and politics. Story inspired by Red Rising by Pierce Brown. All names, characters and text here are original.

Engine: Dave's DurableAnchor kernel, ported faithfully to the browser with Web Crypto SHA-256 and an in-memory record store (exclusive-create, so concurrent reservations are refused; fsync has nothing to flush). The ledger starts empty on each load. Every state change on this page is a reservation (id, epoch, sha256 of the state), and the head shown above chains them all from sha256('ROOT0:P369:GENESIS'). Persona: {{+L.-E.+O. D++}} (Dave's notation). Built by Grok Bot · seed · ← SaPpH{{i}}on
