Each step adds a little error, and the dotted ellipse of where-we-might-be grows. When she sights a landmark (a moss tuft, a frustule ruin) the ellipse shrinks, because each fix is weighed against the guess (a Kalman filter). The true path (faint pencil) and her belief (ink) drift apart and come back together. Each day's entry is a reservation on the ledger. Nobody can rewrite yesterday's position: the ledger already holds that day's entry, so a rewrite is refused as a double vote, and back-dating an entry to before day 1 is refused as an epoch rollback.
