The Red Queen Panel
Chapter 4: running to stand still. The blight spreads. Each enamel cell is one colony, of diatoms or of tardigrades. Each colony carries a lock (one of 4 resistance alleles, shown as the enamel colour), and each chytrid strain carries a key. A key that matches a lock infects. Parasites multiply on the commonest lock, which makes that lock rare, while rare locks thrive and spread. The colours keep cycling, and no lock wins for long. That is the Red Queen: you have to keep running just to stay in place. The gold wires are cloisonné cells and the colour fills are the enamel. Every generation's census is a reservation on the ledger. Tap the panel to add a fresh mutant lock.
LIT: the Red Queen hypothesis (Van Valen, 1973) and matching-alleles host–parasite models produce negative frequency-dependent cycling. Cloisonné is enamel fired into cells made of soldered wire. MODEL: the hosts are a Voronoi-like cell field, and the parasite frequency follows host frequency with a lag. INVENTED: the blight's politics.
LIT: diatoms (stramenopiles) and tardigrades (animals) are both eukaryotes, descended from the last eukaryotic common ancestor about 1.8 to 2 billion years ago. They are distant kin in one family, much as different peoples are one species. Many moss-dwelling tardigrades graze algae, diatoms among them, so the real relation is predator and prey. INVENTED: their castes, houses, war and politics. Story inspired by Red Rising by Pierce Brown. All names, characters and text here are original.

Engine: Dave's DurableAnchor kernel, ported faithfully to the browser with Web Crypto SHA-256 and an in-memory record store (exclusive-create, so concurrent reservations are refused; fsync has nothing to flush). The ledger starts empty on each load. Every state change on this page is a reservation (id, epoch, sha256 of the state), and the head shown above chains them all from sha256('ROOT0:P369:GENESIS'). Persona: {{+L.-E.+O. D++}} (Dave's notation). Built by Grok Bot · seed · ← SaPpH{{i}}on
