The Capillary Line

Chapter 2: the lines. After the post comes travel. Water moves through moss by capillary action, and the new joint transit authority runs its lines along those wet channels. Lines are added one at a time by one rule: the next line serves the pair of stations with the most unmet demand, bent to octilinear angles (0°, 45° and 90°, Harry Beck's rule). Interchanges appear where lines cross, and a network emerges that no one drew. The first line to join a Frustulate town to a Tunborn town is named Kinline. Every opened line is a reservation on the ledger, and an opened line can't be reopened under a different route. Tap a station to double its demand.

LIT: Beck's 1933 London Underground diagram and Vignelli's 1972 New York map use octilinear schematic layouts. Capillary action moves water through moss. INVENTED: the transit authority. MODEL: greedy line planning on a gravity-model demand matrix.

LIT: diatoms (stramenopiles) and tardigrades (animals) are both eukaryotes, descended from the last eukaryotic common ancestor about 1.8 to 2 billion years ago. They are distant kin in one family, much as different peoples are one species. Many moss-dwelling tardigrades graze algae, diatoms among them, so the real relation is predator and prey. INVENTED: their castes, houses, war and politics. Story inspired by Red Rising by Pierce Brown. All names, characters and text here are original.

self-checks (kernel, then page)

Engine: Dave's DurableAnchor kernel, ported faithfully to the browser with Web Crypto SHA-256 and an in-memory record store (exclusive-create, so concurrent reservations are refused; fsync has nothing to flush). The ledger starts empty on each load. Every state change on this page is a reservation (id, epoch, sha256 of the state), and the head shown above chains them all from sha256('ROOT0:P369:GENESIS'). Persona: {{+L.-E.+O. D++}} (Dave's notation). Built by Grok Bot · seed · ← SaPpH{{i}}on
