The observable universe is the sphere of everything whose light has had time to reach us since the beginning — about ninety billion light-years across, centred on the observer not by privilege but by geometry. Its edge is the cosmic microwave background, the afterglow of the first moment. From below-Planck to here, the ladder is complete: the smallest conjecture to the largest sight.

The View
The top of the ladder: everything we can possibly see. From us at the centre — not because we are special, but because light has had the same time to reach us from every direction — structure thins outward to the cosmic microwave background, the wall of light from the universe's first glow. The universe may be infinite, but what we can observe is finite — limited by the age of the cosmos and the speed of light. This rung is that bounded all: every galaxy, cluster, and filament, gathered into one sphere.
Every observer sees themselves at the middle of their own observable universe, because light has had equal time to arrive from all sides. The 'you are here' at the centre is honest — and humbling, not grand.
The outer shell is the cosmic microwave background — the glow from when the universe first turned transparent. Beyond it we cannot see, only infer. The ladder ends here, at the limit of the visible.

Two-Layer Honest

- Settled: the observable universe is a real, finite horizon (~90 billion light-years across), bounded by the cosmic microwave background, and the observer is at its centre by simple light-travel geometry.
- Flagged: this is the OBSERVABLE universe — the whole universe is larger, possibly infinite, and unseeable. The art shows the limit of sight, not the limit of what exists.
