Almost all an atom's mass sits in its nucleus, in almost none of its volume — a density beyond ordinary imagining. Protons (charged) and neutrons (neutral) pack together by the dozen.
The residual strong force pulls nucleons together; the protons' electric charge pushes them apart. The balance behaves startlingly like surface tension in a liquid drop — which is exactly the model the art renders, jiggling and whole.
Split a heavy drop or fuse two light ones and the binding energy released is enormous — the physics of stars and reactors. The nucleus is small, and it is where the universe keeps its fire.
