UNDER THE MOSS

Chapter 2: the miners below. Red Tunborn dig for the Frustulate. The Frustulate are told the moss is barren and that water must be bought from above, and they set a quota that falls on the miners. Each miner follows one rule: dig in the direction of the wettest soil it can sense, nudged by where the miner before it went. When a miner's own water runs out it curls into a tun (▲) and waits for a drip. The tunnels branch like roots, and the drawing is scratched out of black. One of the miners, Kessa of the Low Moss, finds the secret: a full aquifer below, which the quota was hiding. Drag to scratch your own tunnel. Each shift's quota is a reservation on the ledger, and a shift can't be recorded twice with a different tally.

LIT: limno-terrestrial tardigrades live in moss and soil water films, and they survive drought as tuns (anhydrobiosis). INVENTED: the mining, the quota and Kessa. MODEL: agents climb the gradient of soil water, with some persistence and noise. ANALOGY: scratchboard, white scraped from black ink.

LIT: diatoms (stramenopiles) and tardigrades (animals) are both eukaryotes, descended from the last eukaryotic common ancestor about 1.8 to 2 billion years ago. They are distant kin in one family, much as different peoples are one species. Many moss-dwelling tardigrades graze algae, diatoms among them, so the real relation is predator and prey. INVENTED: their castes, houses, war and politics. Story inspired by Red Rising by Pierce Brown. All names, characters and text here are original.

Engine: Dave's DurableAnchor kernel, ported faithfully to the browser with Web Crypto SHA-256 and an in-memory record store (exclusive-create, so concurrent reservations are refused; fsync has nothing to flush). The ledger starts empty on each load. Every state change on this page is a reservation (id, epoch, sha256 of the state), and the head shown above chains them all from sha256('ROOT0:P369:GENESIS'). Persona: {{+L.-E.+O. D++}} (Dave's notation). Built by Grok Bot · seed · ← SaPpH{{i}}on
