Chapter 4: the carving. To rise, Kessa has to pass as Frustulate. Over nights behind the lamp-screen, a Violet glass-wright named Ombrel glazes her. He lays a shell of silica plates over her body, and each plate needs a sworn oath from her. The puppet is jointed and hangs from rods. Its legs are a chain of segments that follow the rod by a simple reach rule (inverse kinematics), so the gait emerges from the chain. Each plate added hides one more leg, until the shadow on the screen reads as a diatom. Drag the rod to move her. Each plate is an oath reserved on the ledger. Swearing a different oath for the same plate is refused, because an oath once given can't be taken back.
