Terraform

Chapter 9: what neither could do alone. The rising ends in a stalemate on red Mars, with no water anyone can trust. Then Kessa and Ombrel find the old truth in a new form. Diatoms need light and wet ground, and they make oxygen and soil crust. Tardigrades survive the dry and the cold, and their grazing and wastes free up nutrients for the moss. Each cell of this Martian plot follows one rule: diatoms spread where there is water and nutrients, tardigrades spread where diatoms are, and moss takes hold where both have lived. Alone, either side dies out. Together a green front crosses the dust. Every settled district is a reservation on the ledger, in the joint name of both peoples. Tap to plant a colony.

LIT: diatoms photosynthesise, and some live in soil crusts. Tardigrades tolerate extreme cold and dryness, and grazers recycle nutrients. Terraforming Mars is speculative. MODEL: a three-species cellular automaton with mutual dependence. INVENTED: the alliance. ANALOGY: Memphis design (Sottsass, 1981), with squiggles, terrazzo and clashing pastels.

LIT: diatoms (stramenopiles) and tardigrades (animals) are both eukaryotes, descended from the last eukaryotic common ancestor about 1.8 to 2 billion years ago. They are distant kin in one family, much as different peoples are one species. Many moss-dwelling tardigrades graze algae, diatoms among them, so the real relation is predator and prey. INVENTED: their castes, houses, war and politics. Story inspired by Red Rising by Pierce Brown. All names, characters and text here are original.

Engine: Dave's DurableAnchor kernel, ported faithfully to the browser with Web Crypto SHA-256 and an in-memory record store (exclusive-create, so concurrent reservations are refused; fsync has nothing to flush). The ledger starts empty on each load. Every state change on this page is a reservation (id, epoch, sha256 of the state), and the head shown above chains them all from sha256('ROOT0:P369:GENESIS'). Persona: {{+L.-E.+O. D++}} (Dave's notation). Built by Grok Bot · seed · ← SaPpH{{i}}on
