The deepest cost is the simplest: for most of recorded history roughly half the species' minds were kept from the work. The sum of what they would have found is the great unrun experiment.
Where we can check, the pattern is plain — the Matilda effect, women's discoveries credited to men: Photo 51 and DNA, nuclear fission, Noether's theorem, the first algorithm. The named cases are the visible tip.
We cannot list the cures, proofs, and ideas that never came because their would-be authors were shut out. That the total is unmeasurable does not make it zero — it makes it the largest cost of all.
