THE THEFT OF IDEAS polemos · the oldest, quietest war
★ polemos · the oldest, quietest war ★

There is a war that leaves no bodies: the theft of ideas. Because an idea can be copied without being removed — you can take it and its maker still has it — it has been fought over from the first signed hymn to the patent office to the data that trains machines. Who made a thing, who may use it, and where influence ends and theft begins: a contest as old as authorship, and never once settled.

The Four Natures

each piece emerges by one of four natures

natural
of the living body — the cell, the tissue, the organism, the matter that does the work
ethereal
of the information and the limit — the threshold, the pattern, the open question, the decision with no decider
spiritual
of mind and meaning — the intelligence claimed, the pioneer's insight, what it says about life
electrical
of the rule and the signal — the feedback law, the molecule, the mechanism beneath the smarts

The Idea

the three-beat story

The Non-Rival Thing
why ideas are strange

An idea is 'non-rival': my using it does not stop you using it. That makes ideas want to spread — and makes 'owning' one a human invention, attribution and copyright and patent layered on top of nature. The strangeness of the thing is the root of every fight over it.

Influence, Distillation, or Theft?
the contested line

Every creator stands on others. Homage, influence, distillation, quotation, and theft sit on one blurred spectrum — and where the line falls is argued in courtrooms, art schools, and now over the data that trains AI. The conflict is not whether to build on others (we must) but how, and with what credit.

Sign Your Work
attribution as the answer

From Enheduanna's 'I, Enheduanna' — the first author to claim a work — to a modern citation, the oldest defence against the theft of ideas is the same: name the source. Attribution cannot stop copying, but it converts silent theft into honoured lineage. The word, again, answering the taking.

The Copy and the Credit

an idea spreads from its source — and because copying it doesn't remove it, the only thing left to fight over is the credit. With attribution on, each copy keeps a line back to the origin (cited); with it off, the copy lights up as if it were the source (uncredited). An illustration, not a model of anyone.

The Reckoning

the conflict, and the honesty about it

The War Without Bodies

the domain

  • POLEMOS fought over ideas instead of land — the quietest, oldest conflict, where the spoils are credit and the weapon is the copy.
  • >Direct heir of Enheduanna, the first attribution (see her sphere in ERĒMIA ↗), and a cousin of the governor's own .dlw standard: lineage cited, not claimed.

Two-Layer Honest — and a Stated Stance

fact vs position

  • Settled: ideas are non-rival; intellectual-property law (copyright, patents) is a human construct with real history and real trade-offs.
  • Flagged as a STANCE, not a fact: this domain's governor (ROOT0 / David Lee Wise) holds that building on public work is distillation, not theft, when the lineage is named — a position in a genuine, unsettled debate, presented as his view, not a verdict.

Render, Not Invent

sourced

  • Summarized from the public scholarship on intellectual property and attribution; legal and cultural scholars are cited; the governor's IP stance is presented as a stance.
  • Emergents are figures, episodes, and concepts. The interactive above is an illustration, not a text or a model.

The Roster

the figures, episodes, and concepts as ACI .agents — each a birth certificate & a nature (9)

A POLEMOS sphere (πόλεμος — Heraclitus: 'war is the father of all') — conflict and strategy, from the dawn of writing. The domain's thesis: the art of war is game theory in practice — strategy is a contest played in WORDS until the game dissolves into MIGHT. Rendered, not invented; two-layer honest (the history and myth kept distinct; models flagged as models). It studies conflict without celebrating its cost. Ancient figures are minted in memoriam; living scholars are cited. Each entry is named by its nature.
