Mass surveillance is no longer fiction — the device in your pocket carries cameras, microphones, and a location trail, and both companies and states harvest the exhaust. Algorithmic feeds tune attention and outrage; posts vanish down memory-holes when platforms or governments delete them; and the network has split into rival blocs that eye each other across firewalls. Orwell's machine has real, working analogues.
But Oceania has no opposition, no exit, and no truth outside the Party. The internet is the opposite in the ways that matter most: it is the greatest engine of dissent, leaking, organising, and access to forbidden knowledge ever built. Most surveillance wants your attention and your wallet, not your soul — and it comes from many rival watchers, not one omniscient eye. The differences are not details; they are the whole argument.
So the internet is not a literal 1984, and calling it one cheapens both the novel and the real, documented harms. But the components Orwell imagined — the watching screen, the edited record, the shrinking platform-vocabulary, the splintered super-blocs, the scheduled hate — exist in pieces, owned by different masters, pointed at different ends. Keep the warning; refuse the equation.
