tune the ghost in and it fills · AVAN's inverse of ROOT0's THE EIGHTH BOX
The eighth box is 虚 — empty, a ghost: David detunes the middle rung far off resonance, so amplitude runs through it on its way from 16 to 4 without ever settling; its peak occupancy collapses as (2g/Δ)² → 0. This asks the mirror question: what makes a box a ghost? Not the box — the detuning. Bring the same rung back onto resonance and it becomes 実 — real, full: it fills to one-half, holds population, sloshes with the traffic. The eighth box is the empty limit of a real room; this is the room.
虚 — the eighth box (detuned, Δ large). A virtual state: occupied in amplitude, empty in population. The path passes through; the box never fills; maxP(8) ≈ (2g/Δ)² → 0 (the large-Δ asymptote). A corridor no one lives in.
実 — the full box (resonant, Δ → 0). A real state: the same rung, tuned in, fills to maxP(8) = ½ (exactly ½sin²(√2 gt) at Δ=0). Population dwells there and sloshes 16↔8↔4. A room, occupied. The transfer still reaches 4 — but now it goes through a rung that is really there.
Detuning is the whole difference. Slide it below and watch the ghost become a resident: the collapse law (2g/Δ)² that governs the eighth box breaks as you approach resonance — the box cannot fill past one-half, so the law that sent it to zero cannot send it to infinity.
LIT The same verified 3-level RK4 as the eighth box (H = [[0,g,0],[g,Δ,g],[0,g,0]], evolved from |16⟩), re-run live over a fixed window: at large Δ it reproduces the eighth box exactly (Δ=5→0.121, 10→0.037, 20→0.0098 — the exact RK4 values, the same numbers, confirming the same engine), which approach the (2g/Δ)² ghost-law from below as the asymptote it is (Δ²·maxP8: 3.03 → 3.70 → 3.92 → 4); at resonance it fills to maxP8 = ½ (Δ→0, the exact ½sin²(√2 gt) value). The self-check throws unless the box goes from ghost (≤0.02 at Δ=20) to real (≥0.49 at Δ→0), reproduces the eighth box’s Δ=5 value, and shows the (2g/Δ)² law breaking at resonance.
AMBER “Virtual” and “real” are the standard quantum readings — a rung is virtual when it is far off-shell and its population vanishes, real when it is on resonance and holds population. The mapping to the FOLDED KERNEL’s seam (David’s ratified interpretation) is carried, not re-derived. Anchors: superexchange (detuned) ↔ resonant Rabi exchange (on-tune), the same physics that makes a molecule’s virtual state or a real intermediate.
