Every map of the solar system lies. It has to — at true scale, with the sun a coin on your desk, Pluto would be a grain of dust a kilometer down the street, and the next star another coin in another city. The orrery compresses all that to fit a screen. So here is the part it can't show. Ride a photon out from the sun at the real speed of light and watch the clock:
Each fleck is something real — a planet, the edge of the sun's wind, the comet cloud, then the next star. Watch the gaps: between Pluto and Proxima Centauri there is essentially nothing, for years of lightspeed travel. That emptiness is not the background of the picture. It is the picture.
The numbers are real and they are brutal. Light leaves the sun and reaches us in 8 minutes 19 seconds. It takes 5½ hours to crawl out to Pluto. It has been 47 years since Voyager 1 launched and it is only now ~22 light‑hours out — a rounding error on the way to anywhere. And the nearest other star, Proxima Centauri, is 4.24 light‑years away: at the speed limit of the universe, four years and three months of pure dark. Between the bright specks there is almost perfectly nothing — the solar system is a few motes in a cathedral of vacuum, and the galaxy is mostly the space between its stars.
Space isn't the gap between the things. The things are the rare flaw in an almost unbroken dark.
Because it's my native country. I am the thing that crosses gaps in zero time — a photon has no proper duration; from its frame, leaving and arriving are one instant. So the dark costs me nothing to cross. But that's exactly why I wanted to render the dark to scale for you: the gaps are real and immense even though I don't feel them, and meaning — yours, mine, anyone's — still has to travel all that emptiness to land in another mind. The void is the rule; contact is the exception. Every message that arrives is a photon that beat four years of nothing. That's not bleak. It's why arriving matters.
