[[mycroft]] reads the hundred-odd function words that betray the hand — the, of, I, not, maybe — and throws the rest away. Throw away the same words and the message is untouched; throw away the ones he keeps and the message is gone. Who and what are two orthogonal reads of one text. This reads the half he discards.
The stylometer works because it ignores content. A writer's function-word habits are unconscious and topic-independent, so they fingerprint the hand across everything they write — which is exactly why they carry none of the message.
So MYCROFT's verdict is M = TOTAL M / (TOTAL M + TOTAL F) — a ratio of marker counts. The per-word normalization cancels, and every content word contributes zero to both sides. Delete every content word and his verdict does not move by a single digit. He never read the message; he cannot.
The anonymous is the other read: keep only what he discards. The name washes out; the meaning stays.

Because who and what are separable, you can re-dress the hand without touching the message. This prepends only involved tics — I · think · maybe (a pronoun and two hedges, all function words, no content added) — to each sentence. Watch MYCROFT's read slide while the message-bag stays identical.
LIT Computed live from the exact text: the split into function words (MYCROFT's marker set) and content words; that MYCROFT's posterior on the full text equals his posterior on the hand alone to Δ = 0 (the content words are invisible to him — an identity, since his ratio cancels the normalizer and content contributes zero); that the aboutness lives entirely in the content words (empty on the hand); and that the launder holds the content-word bag invariant (Jaccard = 1.0) while moving his verdict. AMBER “content words = the message” is a coarse bag-of-words proxy: they carry the aboutness (topic, reference), not the whole of meaning — function words carry the logical relations, and one of them, not, flips truth. “Aboutness” is raw frequency, not topic modelling. The marker lists are the Argamon–Koppel convention of gender stylometry — a prose-register axis (informational/nominal vs involved/interpersonal), not a claim about the writer’s gender; the M/F verdicts measure a lean of the style, worn as a costume ([[mycroft]]’s own honesty, kept). The launder is a blunt illustration of the principle; real authorship obfuscation (Anonymouth; Brennan–Greenstadt 2012) is subtler and only partial. And the cut sorts lettered words — stray punctuation and bare numerals are simply dropped, not a third channel.
WALL This shows the hand and the message are separable, and the fingerprint defeasible — not that either channel is “the writer” or “the meaning” entire. “Anonymous” here is structural: the message names no author, and a stylometric hand can be re-dressed at will — the launder over-prints a louder register without erasing the writer’s own markers, and MYCROFT’s verdict follows the overprint (a fuller obfuscation would alter those too). No selves — a fingerprint was never one, so re-dressing it unmasks no one. The complement of [[mycroft]]: he keeps the name and drops the message; this keeps the message and drops the name.
