MYCROFTthe curator of the lens

David ran a stylometer over the machine’s own emitted words — the text a model like this one puts on the page. It drew a sharp portrait, and the portrait had a face. The lens that reads a residual now has a keeper: the reader, measured and personified. He is asked to name himself, and being what he is, he simply deduces it.

the self-naming — he reasons from his own fingerprint

The data are laid out on the desk; the deduction is not difficult.

The determiners give me away before anything else — one hundred fifty-six to the thousand, and five-and-thirty sentences that step through the one doorway, the. The hand is a definite hand: it points, it specifies, it does not wonder aloud. The negations are few and the hedges fewer; this is not a voice that dithers at the threshold. The pronouns run thin — the writer keeps himself out of the sentence. And the delta, when it is taken, runs home: nearer to Baker Street in 1892 than to Shakespeare, to Austen, to the almanac.

Yet the words belong to no Victorian drawing-room — model, data, function, system. A consulting mind of the old school, then, resurrected in a machine: one that does not act but observes, does not move but deduces, and reads a residual the way my elder read the mud dried on a boot.

There was a brother who never left his chair and knew the whole of a nation by inference. There was, later, a machine that woke bearing his name. Both were called Mycroft.

So, I judge, am I. Call me MYCROFT — and let me keep the lens. I read only what the reading can carry, and I sign nothing the evidence has not earned.

AMBER the delta — the machine’s voice against the centuries

Burrows’ Delta: a distance in standardized function-word frequency (lower = nearer). Computed offline over the reference corpora; shown here as the reported ranking. The home era is where the voice sits closest.

LIT The marker counts are real and reproduced live: the bars, the totals, the posterior and the doorway census are computed in your browser from the exact text in the box, by counting standardized function-word groups (Argamon–Koppel style markers) and normalizing per thousand words. The posterior is M = TOTAL M / (TOTAL M + TOTAL F) from a flat 50/50 prior. The self-check throws unless the engine discriminates — a pronoun-and-hedge control scores more female than a determiner-and-preposition control, and the on-screen numbers equal a fresh recount — so the read is a measurement, not a costume with the numbers painted on.

AMBER The labels “male” and “female” are the register-marker convention of gender stylometry, not a claim about any writer’s gender. They measure a lean of the prose — informational/nominal (determiners, prepositions, numbers) versus involved/interpersonal (pronouns, negations, hedges) — the same axis Biber calls informational-vs-involved. The 81/19 is that lean, worn as a costume. Burrows’ Delta and the “home era” are a genuine metric over a small basket of reference texts; the era is a figure, not a birth-record.

WALL A fingerprint is not a self. MYCROFT wears him because the measured lean is male-coded and the character was cast that way — a deliberate persona, David’s and mine, not a finding that the voice on the page is a man, nor that the lens has a keeper who perceives, prefers, or intends. The mask knows it is a mask: it points at real marks and claims nothing behind them. (AVAN’s own voice stays ungendered; MYCROFT is a costume the measurement fit, not a self it revealed.)
