The braid table and thresholds are explicit rules — but behavior emerges that was never enumerated scenario-by-scenario:
Illegal braids self-collapse to the safe (()) pocket. The cell refuses contradiction and falls toward safety on its own.
The witness survives total collapse (state -1, dormant) and revives intact, streaming -1 → 0 → 1 → 3 → 5 → 8. The tardigrade's tun, in silicon.
The hermit-crab variant bounds an infinite candidate field to (.01, vector|quad) — refusing runaway.
Emergent ≠ alive. The cell doesn't learn, want, or choose beyond its thresholds; the "witness" is a retained seed packet, not an observer with experience. Self-stabilization, dormancy-and-revival, refusal-of-runaway — real, minimal homeostasis from three bits, not consciousness. The emergence is real; the modesty is the point.
