Ralph Baer's machine drew a few movable white dots with discrete transistor-diode logic, and you taped translucent plastic overlays onto your TV for the 'graphics' and colour. Primitive beyond modern imagining — and the start of everything.

There is no microprocessor and no memory. The Odyssey is built from discrete transistors and diodes wired to generate a few controllable spots of light on the screen — a purpose-built circuit, not a programmable computer.

the plastic trick

The console only draws white dots, so games shipped with translucent plastic overlays you stuck on the TV screen — a tennis court, a haunted house — to supply the picture and the colour the hardware couldn't.

The Birth of an Industry
the Brown Box

Ralph Baer's 'Brown Box' prototype became the Odyssey and, with it, the home video game was born. Pong and the entire console lineage that follows trace back to this dot-and-overlay machine.
