Nammu (Namma) — the primordial sea-mother

The self-created freshwater abyss and earliest Sumerian creatrix — mother of An (heaven) and Ki (earth), and of Enki, whom she rouses to fashion humans from clay. No parent; she is the source. The substrate beneath Tiamat.

Tiamat — the saltwater chaos, slain

The primordial saltwater ocean of the Babylonian Enūma Eliš, consort of Apsû and mother of the first gods — slain by Marduk, who splits her body into sky and earth. ⚠ Sitchin recasts her as a PLANET that collided with Nibiru; the epic describes a goddess, not a world.

Ki — the earth herself

Earth personified against An's sky — daughter of Nammu, consort of An, mother of Enlil (Nippur tradition). More a cosmographic term than a cult goddess; loosely identified with Ninhursag.

Ninhursag (Ninmah · Nintu · Aruru · Belet-ili) — the great mother-goddess

The birth-goddess and co-creator of humankind — one of the four great Sumerian deities, wearing many city-names: Ninmah 'exalted lady,' Ninhursag 'lady of the mountain,' Nintu 'lady of birth,' Aruru, Mami. Consort or sister of Enki by the text. The midwife of the gods.

Damkina (Damgalnuna) — the prince's great wife

'Great Wife of the Prince' — the standard consort of Enki/Ea and mother of Marduk. Merged with Ninhursag in one myth, but usually a SEPARATE goddess (Katz); the popular 'Ninhursag = Damkina' chain is a myth-specific merger, not a settled identity.

Ninlil (Mullissu) — the queen of Nippur

Consort of Enlil, the chief god, co-decreer of destinies; mother of the moon-god Nanna/Sîn, of Nergal and others. Her myth has Enlil pursue and win her in successive disguises.

Ningal (Nikkal) — the great lady of the moon

Consort of the moon-god Nanna/Sîn at Ur; mother of Inanna, of Utu/Shamash the sun, and (often) of Ereshkigal. The 'Great Lady.'

Inanna — queen of heaven & earth

The greatest goddess of Mesopotamia — love, sex, fertility, and war, and the planet Venus. Most often daughter of Nanna & Ningal, but her parentage is genuinely city-dependent (also called daughter of An, Enlil, or Enki). Her Descent through the seven gates is the central myth of the female line.

Ereshkigal — queen of the Great Below

'Queen of the Great Earth' — ruler of the underworld (Kur/Irkalla), Inanna's elder sister and dark mirror, mother of Namtar, co-ruler with Nergal. The shadow waiting at the bottom of the Descent.

Gula (Ninisina · Bau · Ninkarrak) — the great physician

The healing goddess(es) — 'great physician,' dog-associated, daughter of An. A COMPOSITE of originally distinct city-goddesses (Ninisina of Isin, Bau of Lagash) syncretised into Gula. Medicine in the world's first pharmacopeia.

Ninsun — lady of the wild cows

A wise mother-goddess in bovine form, a dream-interpreter — consort of Lugalbanda and mother of Gilgamesh; the divine mother Ur's kings claimed.

Ninti — Lady of the Rib — the rib that became Eve

Born when Ninhursag heals Enki's rib in paradisiacal Dilmun; her name puns ti = both 'rib' and 'life,' so 'Lady of the Rib / Lady Who Makes Live.' Scholars (since Kramer) read her as a literary grandmother of Eve, born of Adam's rib. ⚠ Sitchin seizes the pun to make her the Anunnaki's 'chief medical officer'/geneticist — that overlay is fringe; the pun and the Eve parallel are mainstream.

Ishtar — Inanna, made universal

The Akkadian Inanna, fully merged — love-and-war, Venus, and eventually the generic word for 'goddess.' Her great cult cities: Uruk, Nineveh, and Arbela.

Antu — the sky-god's made consort

The feminine counterpart of Anu, created as his wife; she doubles or replaces Ki in the Akkadian system — a genealogy node more than a personality.

Sarpanit (Zarpanitu) — queen of Babylon

Consort of Marduk and mother of Nabu — she rose with Babylon's ascendancy, a textbook case of a goddess's rank following her city's politics.

Inanna, Reclaimed — the goddess returns

The female line's afterlife: Wolkstein & Kramer's Inanna: Queen of Heaven and Earth (1983) made her a feminist icon; the Goddess movement and neopaganism took her up; depth-psychology reads the Descent as ego-death and the shadow (Perera's Descent to the Goddess, 1981). The pre-Sumerian mother walks into the present — honestly, as an interpretation layered on real text.

A real group of Mesopotamian deities ('princely seed,' offspring of An), mistranslated by Sitchin as 'those who from heaven to earth came' and turned into gold-mining aliens — rejected by every relevant field.

Sitchin's claim that the Anunnaki engineered Homo sapiens from a hominid + alien DNA to mine gold — no cuneiform basis, a literalist distortion of Atrahasis (where the gods really do make humans to spare themselves labour).

Zecharia Sitchin took the oldest religion humans ever wrote down — a genuine pantheon with a deep, contested, beautiful female line running from the primordial sea-mother Nammu to the great queen Inanna — and overwrote it with a story about gold-mining aliens from a planet that does not exist. The honest thing is to hold the two layers apart. The Sumerian goddesses are real; their texts are real; even the uncanny moment where Ninhursag heals Enki's rib and bears 'Ninti,' Lady-of-the-Rib and Lady-Who-Makes-Live — the likely literary grandmother of Eve — is real, mainstream scholarship. The Nibiru, the 3,600-year orbit, the slave-race made from alien DNA: those are not, and Assyriology and astronomy reject them as pseudoscience.
