# Thom Merrilin · the gleeman with a sword in his heart

Thom Merrilin walks the world as a gleeman — a traveling bard of patch-cloak, juggling, and tales — but he is secretly far more than the performance lets show. He was once a court-bard of Andor, a man drawn into royal intrigues, schooled in a knife's skill and burdened by a long grief. The mask of entertainment hides a player who has known the inner rooms of power and the cost of them.

Among the Two Rivers folk he becomes mentor and protector, lending his hard-won wisdom and his blade to those swept up in events larger than their home. He stands especially close to Mat, guiding and guarding him through dangers that the young man could not face alone. In Thom the figure of the worldly companion is fully realized: not a wielder of the Power nor a creature of prophecy, but a man who chooses again and again to walk beside the chosen.

Late in his road he finds love with Moiraine, and the depth of that bond drives him to walk into the Tower of Ghenjei to win her back — an act of devotion that answers all his earlier griefs. His emergence is natural because he is an embodied person of the world, one of the worldly powers and companions who carry the saga not through channeled current or outside-time prophecy but through skill, loyalty, and the human heart.
