# The Horn of Valere · the horn that calls the dead heroes back

The Horn of Valere is the legendary horn that, when sounded, calls back the Heroes of the Horn — the great champions the Wheel spins out across the Ages. At its call they return to fight for whoever blows it, a host of legend answering a single mortal breath. Yet there is a limit set upon that service: at the Last Battle, the Heroes answer only the Light, and no other banner can command them in that hour.

It was found in the treasure of the Eye of the World, and it became bound to Mat Cauthon, who first sounds it. By that first sounding the Horn and the man are joined, and the great prophecy-object of the turning Wheel finds the hand the Pattern set it aside for.

Its nature of emergence is ethereal, for the Horn belongs not to the embodied peoples of the world but to the Pattern itself — to the turning Wheel, to its prophecy, and to the heroes the Wheel spins out across the Ages. It is one of the great prophecy-objects of the turning Wheel reaching toward its appointed moment, and that reaching, more than any blast of sound, is what it is.
