# The Aes Sedai · the White Tower and its seven colors

The Aes Sedai are the channelers of the White Tower in Tar Valon — women who wield saidar. They are bound by the Three Oaths, spoken on the Oath Rod, and it is this binding that sets them apart: the Oath Rod brings the agelessness that marks a sister's face for what she is. To be Aes Sedai is to be both gifted and constrained, saidar held within the shape of a vow.

They divide into seven Ajahs by color and by purpose. The Blue serve worthy causes; the Red concern themselves with men who channel; the White pursue logic; the Green hold to the Battle; the Brown gather knowledge; the Yellow turn to Healing; and the Gray work mediation. Beneath these seven runs the hidden Black, who serve the Shadow — a betrayal woven through the colors rather than standing apart from them. Over all of them rises the Amyrlin Seat, who comes from all Ajahs and from none.

Their nature of emergence is ethereal. The Aes Sedai are less a single person than a pattern of purpose laid across the world — a structure of color, oath, and the ageless mark, ordering the channeled saidar toward ends that reach beyond any one sister's hand. They are the Tower's design made manifest, a form that stands within the weave of things and shapes how saidar is met across every cause and color.
