# Padan Fain · the peddler of madness, a hatred all its own

Padan Fain began as a Darkfriend peddler, set like a hound on Rand's trail to hunt the one the Shadow sought. But the thing that wears his name now is no servant. Somewhere along that hunt he was merged with the ancient evil of Mordeth and the cursed city of Shadar Logoth, and out of that joining rose a self-willed hatred that is neither Light nor Dark — a malice answering to nothing but itself.

He is the third power in a war that the Wheel has long shaped as two-sided. Where the Light and the Shadow are locked against each other, Fain stands outside both, a wrongness the Shadow itself has come to fear. His tainted dagger corrupts whatever it touches, and his mere presence sows madness and distrust among those who cross his path, unmaking trust the way Shadar Logoth's old evil unmade a city.

His nature of emergence is ethereal because what walks in his shape is not channeled force or embodied flesh but an outside-time evil — the kind of corrupting hatred that belongs to the Shadow's deeper, unbound horrors, woven against the Pattern rather than within it. He is loyal only to his own malice, a hunger turned person, threading menace through the saga that neither side can claim or command.
