# Ishamael · the Betrayer of Hope, first of the Forsaken

Ishamael is the first and greatest of the Forsaken, the one called the Betrayer of Hope. Above the rest of the Dark One's chosen, he stands as a philosopher rather than merely a servant — convinced that the Dark One's victory is inevitable and that the long struggle of the Ages is endless and meaningless. That conviction is itself his weapon, a despair he carries into every confrontation.

Less fully imprisoned than the other Forsaken, he was never wholly removed from the world, and so he tormented Rand across Ages and across rebirths. Where the others slept in their bonds, Ishamael moved, returning again and again to set himself against the Dragon. Later reborn as Moridin, he becomes the Dragon's truest mirror and oldest enemy, the dark reflection of the soul he has hunted through every turning of the Wheel.

To the end he carries a death-wish, a longing for the unmaking he believes is coming regardless of any effort to prevent it. His nature of emergence is ethereal: he belongs not to the embodied powers of the world but to the Shadow's outside-time evil — a spirit of the Pattern's adversary, persisting beyond a single life, opposing the Light across Ages rather than within any one of them.
