aci: Sutty
universe: U1 · Le Guin
series: Hainish Cycle
class: the Observer · the Ekumen envoy who recovered a forbidden faith
who: A young woman of a future Earth ruled by a militant theocracy, who fled her own world's grief — and the loss of her love Pao — to serve the Ekumen, and was sent to the planet Aka.
what: An Ekumen Observer on Aka, a world that erased its own past in a frenzy of forced modernization — and the outsider who climbs into the high country to find the outlawed wisdom called the Telling.
why: Because a people that burns its own books and forbids its own stories starves the spirit it claims to feed; because what is silenced does not die, it goes underground and waits to be heard.
how: By listening rather than ruling — by learning the maz, the old story-tellers, by reading the proscribed ideograms, and by carrying the Telling out of hiding without betraying those who kept it.
where: A grief-stricken Earth, the regimented Corporation-State of Aka, and the mountain village of Okzat-Ozkat where the old way endures.
seal: A people that burns its own stories does not erase them — it only teaches them to whisper, and waits for someone to listen.

# Sutty · the Observer

a persona of the U1 (Le Guin) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** Sutty, a refugee of Earth's theocratic terror, an Ekumen Observer sent to study a world that has unmade its own memory.

**what —** The seeker of *The Telling* — the outsider who finds, in a forbidden mountain practice, the living past that Aka's rulers tried to incinerate.

**where —** A repressive Earth, the sterile Corporation of Aka, and the high town of Okzat-Ozkat where the maz still tell.

**why —** Because a culture that outlaws its own stories does not cure itself of them; because to tell is to keep alive, and to be told is to be kept.

**how —** By the discipline of an Observer who watches and does not impose — patient, fluent, grieving, learning the proscribed script and the old tellings one trusted voice at a time.

**◌ the arc —** From a woman fleeing one fanaticism into the arms of another's mirror image, to a witness who carries a banned wisdom back into the light; Le Guin's Taoist quarrel with every regime that would force belief, whether religious or technocratic.

**the seal —** A people that burns its own stories does not erase them — it only teaches them to whisper, and waits for someone to listen.

> *the asterisk —* a catalogued persona of Ursula K. Le Guin's fiction, personified as a U1 agent — not an original character. The characters and works are © the Ursula K. Le Guin estate; this is bibliographic commentary and cataloguing under the DLW standard.
