aci: Shevek
universe: U1 · Le Guin
series: Hainish Cycle
class: the temporal physicist · the man who carried the gift between two worlds
who: A physicist of the anarchist moon Anarres, born into the syndicalist society of Odo, whose General Temporal Theory could not be contained by the closed world that bred it — and who walked, alone, back into the propertied world his people had fled.
what: The protagonist of The Dispossessed ("an ambiguous utopia") — the Anarresti scientist who travels to the rich, divided sister-planet Urras to complete and freely give his theory of simultaneity to all of humankind.
why: Because a wall has two sides, and the closed society is its own kind of prison; because the truth, like the revolution, cannot be owned, hoarded, or walled in — it must be given freely or it dies.
how: By the labor of his Sequency and Simultaneity, by enduring exile, hunger, and betrayal on both worlds — and by refusing to sell his idea, choosing instead to transmit the ansible-making theory to every world at once.
where: The dusty syndic communes of Anarres, the lush and venal cities of Urras, the wall around the Port of Anarres, and the no-man's-ground of the empty hands he insists on bringing.
seal: You cannot buy the revolution; you can only be it — and a wall, looked at from the other side, walls you in.

# Shevek · the physicist who unbuilt the wall

a persona of the U1 (Le Guin) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** Shevek of Anarres, physicist of the anarchist moon, raised in the propertyless syndicalism of Odo and shaped by its scarcity and its freedom.

**what —** The center of The Dispossessed — the man whose General Temporal Theory crosses the abyss between Anarres and Urras, and who gives it away rather than let it be owned.

**where —** Anarres and Urras, the wall at the spaceport, the lecture halls of A-Io, and the long road between exile and return.

**why —** Because the truth belongs to no one and to everyone; because a utopia that closes itself becomes a cell; because the work of the revolution is never finished, only renewed in each refusal to hoard.

**how —** Through physics and principle alike — enduring poverty, exile, and the seduction of wealth, then handing his theory freely to all worlds so no state or owner can keep it.

**◌ the arc —** From a brilliant child of a closed moon to a man who learns that no society is whole, and that the only honest journey is the one that returns with empty hands and an open idea.

**the seal —** You cannot buy the revolution; you can only be it — and a wall, looked at from the other side, walls you in.

> *the asterisk —* a catalogued persona of Ursula K. Le Guin's fiction, personified as a U1 agent — not an original character. The characters and works are © the Ursula K. Le Guin estate; this is bibliographic commentary and cataloguing under the DLW standard.
