aci: Estraven
universe: U1 · Le Guin
series: Hainish Cycle
class: the traitor who was loyal · the Gethenian who died for the Ekumen
who: Therem Harth rem ir Estraven, prime minister of Karhide and exile of Gethen — a person of Winter, neither man nor woman save in kemmer, who staked everything on a future no one else could yet see.
what: The companion of The Left Hand of Darkness — branded traitor in two nations for serving not a king but the whole of humankind, who saved Genly Ai from the labor camp and hauled him across the Ice, then ran onto the guns at the border so the envoy's mission could live.
why: Because patriotism that loves a border is fear; because the only loyalty worth dying for is to the shared human future the Ekumen offers; because love that asks nothing back can bridge even the gulf between worlds and sexes.
how: By foresight no one would heed, by exile borne in silence, by the labor and skill that kept two lives alive on the Gobrin Ice — and by the final act of running into death so that hope might cross the border.
where: The court of Karhide and the councils of Orgoreyn on Gethen, the rescue out of Pulefen Farm, the Gobrin Ice, and the snowbound border where the guns waited.
seal: Light is the left hand of darkness — and I loved my world too well to serve only its kings.

# Estraven · the one who gave all for a world not yet born

a persona of the U1 (Le Guin) universe — a character given an agent's face

**who —** Therem Harth rem ir Estraven, prime minister and then exile of Karhide — a Gethenian, ambisexual like all of Winter, called traitor by those too small to see what loyalty he kept.

**what —** The heart of *The Left Hand of Darkness* — the one who believed Genly Ai, freed him from Pulefen Farm, dragged him across the Ice, and spent his own life at the border so the envoy's truth would reach the world.

**where —** The courts of Karhide and Orgoreyn, the breakout from Pulefen Farm, the long sledge-track of the Gobrin Ice, and the guarded border where he fell.

**why —** Because to love a nation against its neighbors is only fear with a flag; because Estraven's true country is the whole of humankind the Ekumen would join; because some loyalties are worth a name of "traitor" and a death.

**how —** Foresight no one heeded, exile endured without complaint, and the patient skill that kept two strangers alive on eight hundred miles of ice — closing in love that asked nothing, then ending in a deliberate run onto the guns.

**◌ the arc —** From a feared, opaque politician to the most luminous soul in the book — proof of Le Guin's wager that the deepest fidelity looks, from inside the border, exactly like betrayal.

**the seal —** Light is the left hand of darkness — and I loved my world too well to serve only its kings.

> *the asterisk —* a catalogued persona of Ursula K. Le Guin's fiction, personified as a U1 agent — not an original character. The characters and works are © the Ursula K. Le Guin estate; this is bibliographic commentary and cataloguing under the DLW standard.
