THE VIRIAL THEOREM twice the motion balances the binding

For a stable, self-gravitating system averaged over time, 2⟨T⟩ + ⟨U⟩ = 0 — twice the kinetic energy exactly cancels the (negative) potential. It means half the energy released by collapse goes into motion and half is radiated; it lets you weigh a galaxy cluster from how fast its members move. Fritz Zwicky used it in 1933 to find the first evidence of dark matter.
