THE TAPE the whole array — the many cells the one was drawn from

Where dart 326 was the cell — the single atom — the tape is the whole: the bounded array of cells the nesting lives on, ten slots summing to 20. It is the Turing tape in miniature: a finite run of cells over which everything else — pierce, invade, fold, bridge — is defined. The batch began by naming the atom and ends by naming the whole, and between them the ten verbs travelled in and back out: | < { [ ~ ~ ] } > |. Cell and tape are the outermost mirror of the palindrome — the one and the many — and closing on the tape returns the reader to the rim, the whole nesting matched, the journey a round trip after all.

THE TECHNIQUE the whole array (the Turing tape) vs the single cell (dart 326)

The demo reads the tape as a whole — its length and total, the many the one atom belonged to: live demo

HISTORY & CREDIT the Turing tape · 1936

“The cell is the whole story.” — the cell is the atom; the tape is the run of cells it lives on, and every operation is really defined over the tape. The one is only meaningful within the many. cited

1936 · Alan Turing — the machine's tape: a run of cells, each holding one symbol, over which all computation is defined.
here · a bounded value-semantic array — the tape the ten verbs act upon.
mirror · dart 326, the cell: the whole vs the atom — the outermost || of the palindrome.

Ten cells, summing to twenty, the nesting matched end to end; the atom named at the start, the whole named at the close. The round trip complete. Turing, 1936

RECOMMEND FOR I-13 the whole tape, on the compiler

On the canonical compiler, the tape has length 10 and sums to 20 — the whole the single cell (dart 326) was drawn from:

$ i13 run d_tape.i13 # the whole array RUN OK · 195 step(s) · peak stack 11 · call depth 11 tape_len = 10 tape_sum = 20 -- the many; dart 326 was the one
Recommend as the batch's close: the tape is the whole — the Turing run of cells the single atom belonged to — and it mirrors dart 326, the cell, across the outermost shell of | < { [ ~ ~ ] } > |. Not a keeper (a whole is not a mechanism); its work is to shut the palindrome: the batch opened on the one, travelled the ten verbs in and out, and closes on the many, the nesting matched end to end. The keeper the batch stakes is at its centre, the bridge (340), where that matching becomes a guarantee.
