THE MILLER-UREY a spark makes the stuff of life

In 1953 a graduate student sealed methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water in glass, ran a spark through it for a week — a lightning storm in a bottle — and found the flask had made amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Life’s ingredients, it turned out, assemble from simple gases and energy. The spark only rearranges bonds; every atom is conserved. The experiment that made the origin of life a laboratory question.
