THE AUTOCATALYTIC SET a set that makes itself

How does life bootstrap before there are genes? Kauffman’s answer: a collectively autocatalytic set — a group of molecules where every member’s formation is catalyzed by another member of the set. No single molecule copies itself; the whole set catalyzes its own reproduction, a closed loop of mutual creation. Above a critical ratio of reactions to molecules it emerges almost inevitably — “order for free.”
