Three slow wobbles in Earth's orbit pace the ice ages: eccentricity (~100 kyr) reshapes the orbit, obliquity (~41 kyr) tilts the axis, and precession (~23 kyr) turns the season of closest approach. They barely change the yearly total sunlight — they move it between seasons and hemispheres. Cool northern summers that fail to melt winter snow are the pacemaker. Rendered, not quoted.

THE MODEL

The summer insolation anomaly at 65 N is a superposition of three periodic forcings:

I(t) = a⋅cos(2πt/100) + b⋅cos(2πt/41) + c⋅cos(2πt/23)

Eccentricity ~100 kyr (orbit shape) · Obliquity ~41 kyr (axial tilt swings 22.1°–24.5°) · Precession ~23 kyr (the spin axis wobbles). The clocks tick at distinct rates, so the summed forcing carries all three signatures at once.

THE ADVERSARY WALL

"One cycle would do — why insist on three?" Because the paleoclimate record is banded: distinct ~100, ~41 and ~23 kyr power. A single frequency cannot reproduce a three-peaked spectrum. Collapse the periods and the fit to the ice-core / benthic record dies — see window 6.

THE GRAVEYARD

The cycles change the total sunlight Earth receives. Fix: obliquity and precession chiefly redistribute insolation between seasons/hemispheres; eccentricity nudges the annual mean by only ~e²/2 (<0.2% at e=0.06).

The dominant beat is the ~100 kyr eccentricity signal, so its forcing is strongest. Fix: eccentricity's direct insolation forcing is the weakest of the three; why the record is 100-kyr paced is still debated. AMBER.

Precession alone dates the glacials. Fix: cool northern-summer insolation (obliquity + precession) is the pacemaker — snow that survives summer. AMBER.
