You slap the table and yell "SET!" — three cards where each feature is all-same or all-different. The joke: that rule is identical to "the three values sum to 0 mod 3," which means a Set is exactly a line in a finite geometry. The deck isn't like a space. It is one.

Across all 85,320 triples in the deck, "all-same-or-all-different" agrees with "sums to 0 mod 3" — 0 mismatches (node-verified). There are exactly 1080 Sets = 81·80/6, because any two cards have one unique completing third.

why the two rules are one

In the field F₃ (arithmetic mod 3), three values sum to 0 iff they are all equal (a+a+a=3a≡0) or a full permutation of {0,1,2} (0+1+2=3≡0) — and two-same-one-different never sums to 0. So "all-same or all-different" per feature IS "sums to zero" per coordinate. A Set is three points that sum to zero — an affine line in AG(4,3). The peel (a party game) and the fruit (collinearity over F₃) are the same predicate wearing two names.
