THE STACK, BOTTOM TO TOP. v1–v3 built the association and executive layers — the deep processing. v4 adds the layer beneath: where experience actually enters. Receptor → relay → thalamus (switchboard) → primary cortex → EPL association → hippocampus/amygdala → prefrontal executive. Six stages. The thalamus is an attention gate: turn attention down and it throttles sight, sound, touch, taste. But smell is never gated — it skips the thalamus entirely and wires direct to the limbic system, which is the mechanistic reason a scent drops you into a memory before you can think.
