‘Takt’ is German for the baton-beat that keeps an orchestra together — and on a production line it’s the rhythm that keeps output matched to demand: available working time divided by units needed. Build faster than the takt and inventory piles up; slower and you fall behind. Every station must finish within one takt. Slide the demand and watch the heartbeat quicken.

Takt time sets the production PACE to exactly match customer demand: takt = available production time ÷ units demanded. Over an 8-hour day (28,800 s) with demand 480, the takt is 60 s — one finished unit must roll off every 60 seconds, no faster (over-production is waste) and no slower (you miss demand). Every station’s cycle time must be at or below the takt to keep the line balanced; a station slower than takt is a bottleneck. It is the metronome of lean manufacturing, tying line speed directly to the pull of demand. A fail-loud self-check throws unless takt equals available-time / demand. ◆ real lean-manufacturing operations, node-verified.
