Noir — the Witness Poisoned

The genre of knowledge that doesn't save. Its best three distilled, its emblem sheared to last place, and the conjecture — a genre's emblem is never its engine — taking its sixth and hardest confirmation.

WHERE IT CAME FROM. Noir is a confluence, not a source — three streams meeting under a name coined after the fact. (1) German Expressionism: émigré directors fleeing Nazism — Lang, Wilder, Siodmak — carried chiaroscuro and unbalanced framing to Hollywood. (2) American hardboiled fiction: Hammett (Red Harvest, 1929), Cain, Chandler, pulped in Black Mask through the Depression, supplied the plots and the cynicism. (3) French poetic realism: the doomed-fatalist mood of Carné and Renoir. And the name arrived last: French critic Nino Frank coined "film noir" in August 1946 — because the wartime ban had just lifted and Paris saw four years of US crime films (The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Laura, Murder My Sweet) all at once. The makers didn't know they'd made a genre. A critic named it from outside, after the fact — noir was an audit applied to films that thought they were routine thrillers. The genre about knowing-too-late was itself only known too late.

TODDLER CORNER

Noir is the detective story's sad twin: the hero figures out who did it, and it doesn't help — the bad thing is too big to fix. Three cooks made it without meaning to (spooky German lighting, tough American crime books, gloomy French movies), and a critic gave it its name only after it was already done. And the thing everyone pictures — shadows, rain, venetian blinds — turns out to be the least important part. Sixth time that's happened: the poster is never the engine.
