In 1976 a Viking orbiter photographed a mesa in Cydonia that, in that blurry frame, looked like a human FACE staring up — and a decade of claims followed. The assay is simple: take a better picture. When higher-resolution cameras returned, the face became an ordinary eroded hill. Slide from the blurry Viking shot to the sharp one and watch it vanish.

The Face is a ~3 km mesa. The 1976 Viking frame resolved it at ~43 m per pixel — only ~70 pixels across, so shadows and missing data left blanks the brain fills with a FACE (pareidolia: our face-detector fires on any two-dots-and-a-line arrangement). The 2001 Mars Global Surveyor image resolved it at ~2 m per pixel — ~1500 pixels — showing an ordinary landform. A fail-loud self-check throws unless the high-resolution pixel count is more than 10× the Viking count — the information that was simply missing, now present. ◆ VERDICT: DEBUNKED.
