The trouble is that half the factors are guesses spanning ten orders of magnitude, so the answer swings from a crowded galaxy to a silent one on a single slider.
The Drake equation exactly: N = R⋆ · f_p · n_e · f_l · f_i · f_c · L, with the well-constrained astrophysical factors fixed (R⋆≈1.5/yr, f_p≈1, n_e≈0.2) and the four uncertain biological/social factors on the sliders. N is recomputed live — pure arithmetic, no fudge. The honest content is the sensitivity: because f_l·f_i·f_c·L is a product of guesses, N spans roughly ten orders of magnitude across plausible inputs, which the readout reports.
Every factor to the right of n_e is genuinely unknown — f_i and f_c especially are single-data-point guesses (us), and L is anyone's estimate. So the equation predicts nothing; it is a framework for organising our ignorance into named unknowns. Treat N as a way to see which unknown dominates, never as a count.
