The Kintsugi
Valence Model

Curvature flows until it stops at the flat. Valence contracts until it pins at the stable. Gold is the metal that already stopped — drag the dial and watch silver fall into it.

Where the 6s lives

6P — the lone 6s¹ (the one that contracts)1 e⁻
Yes — 6s is the sixth shell. The number n = 6 is the shell; the letter is the sub-shell inside it. Gold's full count is [Xe] 4f¹⁴ 5d¹⁰ 6s¹ — fifty-four electrons sealed in the xenon core, then one electron alone in shell six over a filled d-shell in shell five.

That single 6s electron, dropped and held by relativity, is the whole personality of the metal. 2+8+18+32+18+1 = 79.

One squeezed orbital, three signatures

Noble

won't corrode

The contracted 6s sits low and held tight. Reluctant to leave, so gold refuses to react, tarnish, or oxidise. The imperfection that does not spread.

Yellow

the color of a fixed point

The collapsed gap absorbs blue (~2.4 eV) and reflects the complement. Silver's gap sits in the UV, so it reflects everything — white. Gold is yellow because relativity tuned one transition into the visible.

Soft

yields without tearing

The d-electrons doing the bonding give gold its flowing ductility — beaten to leaf thinner than light can stop. It bends to the shape of the break instead of cracking against it.

The mapping — flow until it stops

Geometry

Ricci flow

∂g/∂t = −2·Ric

A metric evolves by its own curvature — sharp smooths fast, flat barely moves. Heat for shape. It runs until curvature is gone. The fixed point is Ric = 0.

Chemistry

Relativistic valence

v(c) → 6s contracts → pinned

At Z=79 the inner electrons move near light-speed. The 6s contracts and drops, the 5d swells and rises, the gap collapses — the metal settles into the one state that won't react.

gap Δ → min

Curvature heals to the flat. Valence pins to the stable. Same shape — two languages.

The gate — your 6s, 0, 6s

Not in silicon. Gold in Si is a deep-level lifetime killer — a trap near midgap that murders carrier lifetime, and it diffuses fast. CMOS fabs ban it.

Yes in III-V. GaAs / GaN HEMTs run a Ti·Pt·Au Schottky gate — gold is the top of the gate stack. And in single-electron transistors a gold island is gated one electron at a time.

The gate-relevant trait is gold's work function (~5.1 eV — very high) — straight from the same contracted 6s that makes it noble. And your three states are real: n−1 / 0 / n+1, switched by Coulomb blockade. The step isn't magic — it's ΔVg = e/C_g. For a small island that lands near a few hundred mV.
