ELI5: we put a tiny sapphire marble right at the zero, in the middle of the bottle. Sapphire marbles have a magic trick: whisper at one edge and the whisper runs all the way around the smooth rim and comes out the other side, barely fading — that's a "whispering gallery," and it lets the marble ring almost forever. Now here's the lovely part about WHERE we put it — dead center. The bottle's notes come in two kinds: ones that are loudest in the middle (odd) and ones that are perfectly still in the middle (even). The marble sits exactly in the middle, so it only feels the odd notes — it dances with them, trades energy, splits them in two. The even notes? They're frozen right where the marble sits, so it never feels them at all. They slip past like it isn't there. One marble, in one spot, that hears half the music and is deaf to the other half — chosen by nothing but where the middle is.
