Bacteria are not the loners we imagined. Each one constantly leaks a small signaling molecule — an autoinducer — and senses how much is around. A low reading means 'few of us'; a high reading means 'a crowd.' The bacterium is, in effect, taking a census of its own kind.
Acting as One
the switch
Many behaviors are useless alone and powerful together — glowing, forming a biofilm, attacking a host. So bacteria hold these in reserve until the signal crosses a threshold, then the whole population switches on at once. The vote passes, and the colony acts in unison.
The Glowing Squid

The classic case: Vibrio fischeri, the bacterium that lights the Hawaiian bobtail squid. Dilute, it is dark; packed into the squid's light organ, it glows — because only at high density does each cell turn its luminescence genes on. Bonnie Bassler later showed bacteria even share an inter-species dialect.

How the Vote Works

Each cell emits and detects an autoinducer; its concentration rises with density; receptors flip gene expression once a threshold is crossed, and positive feedback then locks the whole population on — a molecular ballot with a tipping point.
Some pathogens use it to time their attack until they outnumber the host's defenses — which is why blocking the signal ('quorum quenching') is a real antibacterial strategy.
